Sneaky Sperm Whale

Fish Head Stew

Everybody cry for the stripper of the sea
Feeling so entitled to his fishing industry
Now he has to find another way to stay afloat
Rightful owner started fishing underneath his boat

How did all the codfish ever just belong to you?
Stripping bare the ocean isn’t very nice to do
Now the rightful owners come to make you pay your due
Please enjoy the fish heads, maybe you can make a stew!

Everybody cry for the fishing nets and gear
Whales are bending hooks and it’s increasing every year
50 tonnes of whale and they’re coming here to teach
Notice all the sea lions up starving on the beach

Everybody cry for the empty-handed kid
Fishing out the oceans leaving jellyfish and squid
You can make a chowder from the bait that’s in your pail
School is now in session and your teacher is a whale!

Freedom Chase off Hawaii’s Big Island

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015
Chase for Freedom

Chase for Freedom

Near ten days they chased that whale
His trumpet sounding through the gale
The bow was chopping caps of white
We saw them glowing in the night

A starboard moon splashed the horizon
Hard to port, the sun came risin’
Ropes at ready, one man stood
Raised a long pole sharp ‘n good

Braced against the bounding main
Through the swells took steady aim
And when that whale was well in reach
Just before his mighty breach

The long boat pulled up along side
Of a whale ten days had cried
Boatswain gave a mighty shove
Blade on pole cut deep for love

Soon thereafter he was free
Just as every whale should be
No more ropes and traps and trash
Down came flukes with thunderous crash

Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest
Cutting whales loose feels the best
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Returned that whale from whence he’d come!

The Fish, the Fry and the Whale

Sunday, January 25th, 2015
Free the Orcas!

Free the Orcas!

The Fish the Fry and the Whale

The fish, the fry and the whale
Fortunes entwined at the tail
Heartless captivity slammed
River of sadness be dammed

The tiniest fish is the smelt
Incredible fate she’s been dealt
Endowed by the courts with great powers
To heal watersheds within hours

For NOAA, the message is clear
Move boldly ahead without fear
Give the Endangered priority
And resident orcas seniority

Seventy Eight are what’s left
After four decades of theft
Tell whale prisons run by pathetics
We need Lolitas genetics!

NOAA must not be complacent
Restore the Columbia Basin
The watershed needs King Chinook
And the sea needs the orcas you took!

joey racano

Everything NOAA needs to know to make this decision is right here in black and white: Lolita must go free.

“Supreme Court leaves in place a longstanding ruling that the Endangered Species Act requires federal agencies to consider the preservation of all endangered species their highest priority.”

Marching in Miami

700 months in a little pool-

700 months in a little pool-

Marching in Miami

They’re marching in Miami
to free Lolita who
spent 45 consecutive years
inside a petting zoo

The kids are so against it
They’ll March in Seattle too
Lolita don’t you worry we
will soon be there for you!

For 700 hundred months
they held you captive in a park
Feeding you dead fish
and pouring chlorine after dark

But now because of Blackfish
the world has woken up
And science says a mom’s still there
who longs to see her pup

They’re marching on Miami
and watching ’round the world
As one, Lolita lovers say:
It’s time to release the girl!

Point of No Return

Point of No Return

Introduction to Triton

Everybody, please meet Triton
Forgive me if these pictures frighten
The magnitude of these foul ships
Forces one to come to grips

Just how much oil do we need
When does good sense outpace greed
Hard work just brought back the whale
Now these fools are straining shale

Pointed ship and kind of stocky
Made with pride in Nagasaki
Please don’t buy from Mitsubishi
Always up to something fishy

Live aboard or land your chopper
One good missile, that would stop her
Triton, this is Planet Mother:
Stop pretending there’s another

Have you hugged your Whale today?

Friday, July 25th, 2014
Have you hugged your whale today?

Have you hugged your whale today?

Have you hugged your whale today?

Willing a Whale

Somebody once told me if I hugged a whale
The oceans would calm and the sea beasts prevail
But my arms were too short and I knew I would fail
Even when I tried it down by his tail

So using a technique I learned in Madrid
Forehead to forehead I hugged with my Id
That was the weirdest thing I ever did
The whale was surprised melding minds with a kid

I thought ‘Do you like me?’ The whale pictured, ‘Yes,’
and showed me where Blackbeard had buried a chest
‘Now, do run along boy, I’m needing of rest’
And that’s when I hugged him for being the best

That was the last time I saw Mr. Whale
To this day, nobody believes in this tale
But sure as a sunset, the sea did prevail
So call it a fluke and I’ll call it his tail

When Kids just Went Sailing

The world is exploding, our systems eroding
The warning signs say that it’s time to go boating
Follow the children and ask if it fits them
to allow us on board the new dawn they bring with them

And as we pass garbage, huge islands of plastic
we’ll do transmutation, make something fantastic!
Put holes in a cocoanut, make it a whale call
Blow through it toward the horizon ’till nightfall

Awake in the morning surrounded by whales
Lifting their flukes to protect us from gales
Each smiling broadly, baleen ten feet wide
Making shrimp scampi from krill, side to side

After the storm, our eyes made out the form
of millions of whales, could this be the new norm?
In whale pod formation, the largest cetacean
signaled with flukes to go back to our nation

With pinpoint precision, a pod of ten million
left the pavilion in a splash of vermillion
Set on a course headed for the horizon
right underneath where a blue moon was rising

Humpbacks breached left and Fin whales breached right
Gray whales were darker, Belugas were white
Orcas went down as the Blue Whales arose
I sat on the bow and they rubbed on my toes

They left us ashore on a still-rising island
I jumped off the arc and the lead whale was smiling
Knee deep in surf, I admired the place
Mango trees, bumble bees, lots of great space

and so on and so on and so on it goes
the story of children with whale petting toes
who ended the old ways of sonar and whaling
ended forever when kids just went sailing!

It Happened on Earth Day

It happened on Earth Day, Washington, DC
A 90 foot Great Blue Whale came from the sea
Center stage, Freedom Plaza, she spread her great fins
Her message was, “Save me and everybody wins!”

The press did the coverage, the whale did the rest
Pin one more Earth-medal on Sir-Gershon’s chest
A great whale emergency in the Washington Post
Great Whale Conservancy, we love you the most!

joey’s note: you can read on, or skip to the bottom for petitions to sign…

An Ocean of Action!

What did you do on Earth Day? Did you celebrate, or did you make something cool happen and celebrate too? Don’t tell us, we already know the answer- this is a family of heroes! 🙂 Well, while you were out kicking butt, we want to tell you that our own beloved Mz Blue (a 90 foot long exact replica of an actual Great Blue Whale who lives in the Sea of Cortez, aka the Vermillion Sea’) was spotted on the grounds of Freedom Plaza in Washington DC. She was bringing attention to the plight of our marine cousins from the many threats now facing them. These threats include:

*Ship strikes, which are becoming all too common. Recently in California, there was a proposal to move shipping lanes, but it was not enough to save Mz Blue. Those lanes must be moved outside of the Channel Islands, according to our experts!

*Seismic Testing. Even though places like Los Angeles are moving from coal to natural gas fired power plants, there will still be seismic testing to search for oil and natural gas, (as well as once through cooling which destroys plankton when sea water is pumped into intakes). Seismic testing is a threat to whales on both U.S. coasts as well as in 70% of the oceans around the globe!

*Noise pollution. Whales have very low voices and historically were able to talk across whole oceans! Now that has been reduced to 100 yards because of all the anthropomorphic noise. It needs to stop- after all, silence is golden!

*Whaling. Whaling is a barbaric olden days practice that needs to stop. We stand beside our brothers at Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as they put their own bodies in harms way to save Mz Blue!

www.seashepherd.org

*SONAR. The US Navy intends to do HSTT (Hawaii-Southern California Training and Testing), which is expected to kill many whales during ocean war games in the SE Pacific over a 5-year period starting January 2014.

*Ignorance. Education is the key, and we stand beside our brothers and sisters in Oceana www.oceana.org and Greenpeace USA www.greenpeace.org as they wage massive campaigns across the continent and world, educating and organizing the future ocean and Earth-warriors of tomorrow.

Here’s a great report on the Earth Day event from NRDC:

Save the World in Thirty Days

With a whale of an emergency
I come to you with urgency
about a seismic test insurgency
converging on the virgin sea

As giant storms keep forming
we know the Earth is warming
The oil wars keep storming
but they just keep terraforming

Miles below the soil
The oil monkeys toil
Whole oceans they despoil
To quench their thirst for oil

Offshore rigs are fixtures
like global Jack the Rippers
They’re taking seismic pictures
Maxing out the Richters

Save the World in 30 Days:

A-C-T-I-O-N * A-L-E-R-T!

The issue is SEISMIC TESTING, and you know that ‘we’ are the specialists, right? 🙂 LET’S ROCK!

This comes to us by way of our brothers and sisters in OCEANA, who contacted our page and asked us to get this message out.

Recently, the Obama administration decided that if you really wanted to get the President’s attention, you should be able to garner at least 100,000 signatures for your issue. That is our challenge this time folks…

It is a message about such a petition that is streaking toward the needed 100,000 threshold the whales need to keep their ears intact:

With the Atlantic Coast about to get bombarded with seismic air canons that will certainly deafen our best friends under the sea (as well as ruin the ocean-based economy of 7 Atlantic seaboard states), famous TV and movie star *and known ocean warrior* TED DANSEN sends you this message today- we need 100,000 sigs and we have 30 days to gather them. Please please please * sign sign sign * and * share share share!

Here is the original message we got from OCEANA out of Washington DC:

Joey,

I hope all is well. When we chatted a while back you asked if there was a way to help push back against the Atlantic seismic airgun proposal, and now there is, in a big way!

Ted Danson agreed to author a whitehouse.gov petition against seismic testing in the Atlantic:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/stop-seismic-airgun-testing-oil-and-gas-us-east-coast/khpw6LCt

We need 100,000 signatures in 30 days to get a response from the President! Can you send the petition out to the groups who worked with you against PG & E’s airguns in the Pacific and also post to your groups facebook page, twitter etc.? We are using the twitter hashtag: #seismic.

Our new seismic report, video and other materials available here: http://oceana.org/en/news-media/publications/reports/a-deaf-whale-is-a-dead-whale-seismic-airgun-testing-for-oil-and-gas-threatens-marine-life-and-co (key point of the report is that according to the Department of the Interior, 138,500 whales and dolphins could be injured by the proposed eight years of seismic airgun testing in an area twice the size of California!).

We could really use your help on this. Let us know, thanks!

Best,
