Fish Head Stew

Everybody cry for the stripper of the sea
Feeling so entitled to his fishing industry
Now he has to find another way to stay afloat
Rightful owner started fishing underneath his boat

How did all the codfish ever just belong to you?
Stripping bare the ocean isn’t very nice to do
Now the rightful owners come to make you pay your due
Please enjoy the fish heads, maybe you can make a stew!

Everybody cry for the fishing nets and gear
Whales are bending hooks and it’s increasing every year
50 tonnes of whale and they’re coming here to teach
Notice all the sea lions up starving on the beach

Everybody cry for the empty-handed kid
Fishing out the oceans leaving jellyfish and squid
You can make a chowder from the bait that’s in your pail
School is now in session and your teacher is a whale!

The Fish, the Fry and the Whale

Free the Orcas!

Free the Orcas!

The Fish the Fry and the Whale

The fish, the fry and the whale
Fortunes entwined at the tail
Heartless captivity slammed
River of sadness be dammed

The tiniest fish is the smelt
Incredible fate she’s been dealt
Endowed by the courts with great powers
To heal watersheds within hours

For NOAA, the message is clear
Move boldly ahead without fear
Give the Endangered priority
And resident orcas seniority

Seventy Eight are what’s left
After four decades of theft
Tell whale prisons run by pathetics
We need Lolitas genetics!

NOAA must not be complacent
Restore the Columbia Basin
The watershed needs King Chinook
And the sea needs the orcas you took!

joey racano

Everything NOAA needs to know to make this decision is right here in black and white: Lolita must go free.

“Supreme Court leaves in place a longstanding ruling that the Endangered Species Act requires federal agencies to consider the preservation of all endangered species their highest priority.”

Thousands March for Lolita in Miami, Elsewhere

Thousands March on Miami Seaquarium

Thousands March on Miami Seaquarium

Thousands Rise for Freedom

‘Freedom, let your sweet bell ring
Orcas haven’t done a thing
Only fools would want to cage
The greatest predator of our age’

joey racano

“Lolita is a southern Orca who was captured 44 years ago in Puget Sound. She is part of an endangered species that is in vital need of naturally reproducing. January 17 is a day when humans will meet near her holding tank to demand that she be returned to her waters where her genes will help the species recover. She is an intelligent, social, family oriented animal who has been calling to her family for decades. It is time to reunite her with her family. It is the kind and humane thing to do.”
-David Georgi, professor emeritus

Marches were also held in Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego, Colorado and in London, all demanding freedom for orcas and for and end to the slaughter of dolphins at Tajji, Japan.

Point of No Return

Introduction to Triton

Everybody, please meet Triton
Forgive me if these pictures frighten
The magnitude of these foul ships
Forces one to come to grips

Just how much oil do we need
When does good sense outpace greed
Hard work just brought back the whale
Now these fools are straining shale

Pointed ship and kind of stocky
Made with pride in Nagasaki
Please don’t buy from Mitsubishi
Always up to something fishy

Live aboard or land your chopper
One good missile, that would stop her
Triton, this is Planet Mother:
Stop pretending there’s another

Go Sea Shepherd!

Go Sea Shepherd!

Another Summer beach season comes and goes
Good folks digging in the sand with toes
Clouds lined up like cookies in the sky
Kids at the shore keep a watchful eye

Thar she blows!- comes the jubilant shout
as another mamma Humpback blows her spout
They’re just in time for the yearly jubilation
Thank You Whales, and the whole Whale Nation!

You saved us once and we took your advice
We promise that you’ll never have to save us twice
From the Shepherds of the Sea to the Greens of Peace:
‘Let the ecosystems heal and the Seals increase!’

3rd Annual Thank You Whales

3rd Annual Thank You Whales

World in Peril, World of Hope

A World in peril, great in scope
But all’s not lost if we have hope
Our very skies and endless seas
Face man-made realities

Who brought the idea with them
of predation on our life support system
What a way to make a living
Take take take and never giving

Children won’t learn much from whales
languishing in cement jails
Money spent on their ‘protection’
steers them in the wrong direction

Nations rise and nations fall
Depending on who heeds the call
Shoguns wise allowed no logging
Make a mudslide, get a flogging

The most important thing we do
is teach those who come after you
Give them knowledge, not BS
For they will have to clean our mess

Mark your calender folks! August 16th, 2014 is the date of this years 3rd Annual Thank You Whales celebration, held at the Avila Community Center in Avila Beach, California. Each year, Thank You Whales commemorates the amazing events at Avila Beach, when whales swam into the harbor in pre-hunting numbers- right up to the gates of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. The owners of the Power Plant, Pacific Gas and Electric (recently indicted):

http://articles.latimes.com/2014/apr/01/local/la-me-pipeline-charges-20140402

…were about to begin bombarding the waters off the Central Coast of California with 69,000 sound blasts from air canons louder than an atomic bomb. This seismic testing would have virtually wiped out individuals and pods of many species who frequent the area, including Humpbacks and Great Blue Whales and a species of Harbor Porpoise endemic only to the area. The whales saved the day.

Please join us this year! There will be many whale dignitaries and authors, music, food and keynote speech by Captain Paul Watson, a worldwide hero fresh off a global victory against the Antarctic whale-poaching operation by the Japanese, recently stopped by the International Whale Commission. See Paul’s interview with Bill Maher:

Special thanks to the OOG ladies making this years event happen, teaching kids about whales in their classrooms and rewarding the class who provides this years winning art for our T shirts with a pizza party!

Noon-4:00 Saturday, August 16th, Avila Community Center, California.

Then attend our Sunset spiritual prayer on Old Port Beach at fire pit, led by Fred Collins, Tribal Administrator, Northern Chumash Tribal Council, with ‘Sunset Blessings’ and Brother Michael J. Phillips, Benedictine Monk, with ‘Flower ceremony’

Optional daytime activities include: *Morning and on-going Beach Cleanup, *Mermaid Contest, *Whale and Sea-oriented Sand Sculptures!

With happy-hope for the future,

The Nudibranch Train

The Nudibranch Train

The Nudibranch Train

‘All aboard!’ came the pullman porter’s refrain
so we all climbed aboard on the Nudibranch Train
Sloshing his feet, he slid down the aisle
collected our tickets and left with a smile

And so it began in a warm summer rain
A curious trek on the Nudibranch Train
which took us from somewhere, I won’t be specific
Eventually plunged us into the Pacific

The colors were stellar on every box car
(Nudibranchs wear the couture of a star)
Hues made of blue, lemon-lime, red and mango
Nudibranchs look like a visual tango

Even the rainbows turn green with envy
A kaleidoscope knows that he’s been beaten when he
encounters a Nudibranch riding the currents
Fluorescent with pinstripes, and black light deterrents

As goes the engine, so goes the caboose
They covered the spectrum from pink to chartreuse
One car was striped red and white candy cane
What’s not to like on the Nudibranch Train?

Back at the station, a shark and cetacean
awaited the train with a friendly crustacean
out to console a poor butterflies soul
who used to be Monarch (now Nudibranch’s role)

‘Woodside! Callabassas!’ the Porter did shout
And slow as molassass, the Jellyfish got out
They always paid less, and were loved for chatoyancy
Though sometimes, without them, it helped with the bouyancy

Transporting us wasn’t too hard for these gents
But we lost all our luggage in geotherm vents
Topside, the storm raged in circular motion
But it wasn’t a factor this deep in the ocean

Finally arriving at Marrianna’s Trench
I helped them switch tracks with a barnacled wrench
Cuttlefish cuddled and Octopus cried
while mermaids and conch shells waited outside

Some said hello, some said their farewells
Some twirled antennae, and vibrated shells
Next thing you know we zoomed off again
Another adventure on the Nudibranch Train!

Thank You Whales 2013

August 17th- make plans to be there!

August 17th- make plans to be there!

Get ready for the 3rd annual 'Thank You Whales' celebration, coming August 17th, 2013 on Old Port Beach in Avila, California. This yearly celebration commemorates the arrival of whales at the gates of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in 2012. The whales arrived in pre-hunting numbers, coinciding with the Chumash celebration of their vollages and canoes known as 'Tomol', and it all happened just in time to garner the world media attention needed to Stop the Diablo Canyon Seismic Testing. Many people and organizations bonded together to help, and the California Coastal Commission played a leadership role, with their historic November 14th 'NO HIGH ENERGY 260 DECIBEL SEISMIC TESTING IN CALIFORNIA WATERS' decision, but it was the whales of Avila- a modern day bona fide miracle- that really saved 500 or so nautical miles of marine ecosystem! This sponsors for Thank You Whales this year show those bonds have grown even stronger between us all, and we hope you will be there, August 17th, 2013, Old Port Beach, Avila, starts at 10:00am. Look for the huge whale statue! *VERY* Special speakers! Love and respect, joey racano
