State of the Union 2015

State of the Union Address 2015
-by Joseph Racano

Thank you.

I thank you very much and now I ask that you please be seated.

2015 and its predecessor were amazing years in history as is well known by all who shared them, not only in our great nation but those having done so in countries abroad as well.

We watched live-wire jetliners vanish without a trace, banksters being rescued and genocidal dogmatics elevated to sainthood. In America, we endured the offhand propensity for poorly trained and rarely prosecuted law enforcement personnel to address racial tensions with the barrel of their service revolvers.

We continue to label people ‘aliens’, though they come from the same planet we do.

Perhaps it would be wise for us to envision what might come next if indeed we were all made to speak the same language. The next step could be to all wear the same shoes, wear the same ties, drive the same cars, and even hold the same opinions. In Paris, proponents of such extreme monoculture recently attempted to silence freedom of expression and diversity with terror tactics. In a sign of our troubled times, authorities then handed instant victory to these terrorists by immediately arresting scores of people afterward who voiced any support for their cause, however misguided their tactics.

Ask yourself, what is the fate for those who choose not to be Charlie Hebdo? A dragonfly-sized drone on the windowsill, eavesdropping on their morning coffee, or maybe a larger one dropping bombs on their wedding reception? It is no longer enough to agree to disagree. We must be willing to defend those with whom we disagree, and do so without fear of being labeled an enemy combatant.

In Guantanamo, a long-held prisoner has written a soon-to-be-released book about his time in that shameful, still open American torture chamber. It has been heavily redacted. One wonders if he will go on a book tour after being tortured in prison, and will his torturer Dick Cheney go to prison after completing his book tour.

With the republicans now firmly in control of the United State Senate, and their democratic counterparts keeping them there by disenfranchising their own voter base, it is unlikely a new world paradigm is on the horizon to replace the new world order.

And without that paradigm, America, along with the rest of the world, can only continue our slide into the abyss of a not-so-brave new world, one without glaciers, fresh air, truth, or freedom.

Thank you and have a good evening!

Thousands March for Lolita in Miami, Elsewhere

Thousands March on Miami Seaquarium

Thousands March on Miami Seaquarium

Thousands Rise for Freedom

‘Freedom, let your sweet bell ring
Orcas haven’t done a thing
Only fools would want to cage
The greatest predator of our age’

joey racano

“Lolita is a southern Orca who was captured 44 years ago in Puget Sound. She is part of an endangered species that is in vital need of naturally reproducing. January 17 is a day when humans will meet near her holding tank to demand that she be returned to her waters where her genes will help the species recover. She is an intelligent, social, family oriented animal who has been calling to her family for decades. It is time to reunite her with her family. It is the kind and humane thing to do.”
-David Georgi, professor emeritus

Marches were also held in Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego, Colorado and in London, all demanding freedom for orcas and for and end to the slaughter of dolphins at Tajji, Japan.

Marching in Miami

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015
700 months in a little pool-

700 months in a little pool-

Marching in Miami

They’re marching in Miami
to free Lolita who
spent 45 consecutive years
inside a petting zoo

The kids are so against it
They’ll March in Seattle too
Lolita don’t you worry we
will soon be there for you!

For 700 hundred months
they held you captive in a park
Feeding you dead fish
and pouring chlorine after dark

But now because of Blackfish
the world has woken up
And science says a mom’s still there
who longs to see her pup

They’re marching on Miami
and watching ’round the world
As one, Lolita lovers say:
It’s time to release the girl!

Happy Trickster

Happy Trickster

Happy Trickster

Happy trickster, that’s Coyote
Saw him when I dropped peyote
Laying there in bed with me
Sound asleep and dreaming free

Toes were twitching, he was running
Some fool redneck out there gunning
Left his paw prints on the track
Walked on leaves and doubled back

Happy trickster ears akimbo
Living life in constant limbo
Hunted trapped reviled and hated
So under appreciated

Watch him prance amid the grasses
Sneak amid the sleeping masses
Got Coyote? I say thank it
Let him use your favorite blanket

Point of No Return

Introduction to Triton

Everybody, please meet Triton
Forgive me if these pictures frighten
The magnitude of these foul ships
Forces one to come to grips

Just how much oil do we need
When does good sense outpace greed
Hard work just brought back the whale
Now these fools are straining shale

Pointed ship and kind of stocky
Made with pride in Nagasaki
Please don’t buy from Mitsubishi
Always up to something fishy

Live aboard or land your chopper
One good missile, that would stop her
Triton, this is Planet Mother:
Stop pretending there’s another

Go Sea Shepherd!

Go Sea Shepherd!

Another Summer beach season comes and goes
Good folks digging in the sand with toes
Clouds lined up like cookies in the sky
Kids at the shore keep a watchful eye

Thar she blows!- comes the jubilant shout
as another mamma Humpback blows her spout
They’re just in time for the yearly jubilation
Thank You Whales, and the whole Whale Nation!

You saved us once and we took your advice
We promise that you’ll never have to save us twice

Have you hugged your Whale today?

Friday, July 25th, 2014
Have you hugged your whale today?

Have you hugged your whale today?

Have you hugged your whale today?

Willing a Whale

Somebody once told me if I hugged a whale
The oceans would calm and the sea beasts prevail
But my arms were too short and I knew I would fail
Even when I tried it down by his tail

So using a technique I learned in Madrid
Forehead to forehead I hugged with my Id
That was the weirdest thing I ever did
The whale was surprised melding minds with a kid

I thought ‘Do you like me?’ The whale pictured, ‘Yes,’
and showed me where Blackbeard had buried a chest
‘Now, do run along boy, I’m needing of rest’
And that’s when I hugged him for being the best

That was the last time I saw Mr. Whale
To this day, nobody believes in this tale
But sure as a sunset, the sea did prevail
So call it a fluke and I’ll call it his tail

When the Baleen Doors Slam Shut

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014
Door slams shut!

Whump!

When the Doors Slam Shut

No one could believe it
Whales were in the Bay
In numbers that had not been seen
for many long a day

A shutterbugs exclusive
Who gets to be that close?
Baleenoptera performance opera
In a mighty dose

Some drew near in kayaks
And birds danced on the nose
But you don’t want to be there
when that cavern starts to close!

Zooming in with cameras
Focus all in view
Zooming birds, excited words
And someone lost a shoe

Surfboards crossed the safety borders
Let me tell you whut-
WHUMP! You better back up when
The baleen doors slam shut!

Notes: Having evolved together in a sacred partnership, the Pelicans are in no danger. The whale in this photo waited patiently for the bird to fly out before closing up shop!

World in Peril, World of Hope

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014
3rd Annual Thank You Whales

3rd Annual Thank You Whales

World in Peril, World of Hope

A World in peril, great in scope
But all’s not lost if we have hope
Our very skies and endless seas
Face man-made realities

Who brought the idea with them
of predation on our life support system
What a way to make a living
Take take take and never giving

Children won’t learn much from whales
languishing in cement jails
Money spent on their ‘protection’
steers them in the wrong direction

Nations rise and nations fall
Depending on who heeds the call
Shoguns wise allowed no logging
Make a mudslide, get a flogging

The most important thing we do
is teach those who come after you
Give them knowledge, not BS
For they will have to clean our mess

jr

Mark your calender folks! August 16th, 2014 is the date of this years 3rd Annual Thank You Whales celebration, held at the Avila Community Center in Avila Beach, California. Each year, Thank You Whales commemorates the amazing events at Avila Beach, when whales swam into the harbor in pre-hunting numbers- right up to the gates of Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. The owners of the Power Plant, Pacific Gas and Electric (recently indicted):

http://articles.latimes.com/2014/apr/01/local/la-me-pipeline-charges-20140402

…were about to begin bombarding the waters off the Central Coast of California with 69,000 sound blasts from air canons louder than an atomic bomb. This seismic testing would have virtually wiped out individuals and pods of many species who frequent the area, including Humpbacks and Great Blue Whales and a species of Harbor Porpoise endemic only to the area. The whales saved the day.

Please join us this year! There will be many whale dignitaries and authors, music, food and keynote speech by Captain Paul Watson, a worldwide hero fresh off a global victory against the Antarctic whale-poaching operation by the Japanese, recently stopped by the International Whale Commission. See Paul’s interview with Bill Maher:

http://ecowatch.com/2014/04/08/sea-shepherd-bill-maher/

Special thanks to the OOG ladies making this years event happen, teaching kids about whales in their classrooms and rewarding the class who provides this years winning art for our T shirts with a pizza party!

Noon-4:00 Saturday, August 16th, Avila Community Center, California.

Then attend our Sunset spiritual prayer on Old Port Beach at fire pit, led by Fred Collins, Tribal Administrator, Northern Chumash Tribal Council, with ‘Sunset Blessings’ and Brother Michael J. Phillips, Benedictine Monk, with ‘Flower ceremony’

Optional daytime activities include: *Morning and on-going Beach Cleanup, *Mermaid Contest, *Whale and Sea-oriented Sand Sculptures!

National Disgrace

National Geographic

Nat Geo is the sponsor of world oceans summit 2014 in Halfmoon Bay- *BUT* instead of pondering why the whales strand, the focus is better ways of euthanasia:

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/02/140205-whale-stranding-euthanasia-oceans-animals-medicine-science/#

In our posting last week entitled ‘Haunted House on Half Moon Hill’, I wrote about the shameful participants in World Oceans Summit 2014, to be held in the Ritz Carlton mansion in Half Moon Bay later this month (Feb 24-27). The cost alone should get your attention! It’s several thousand dollars to get in the door!

http://www.economistinsights.com/sustainability-resources/event/world-ocean-summit-2014

The event is a whose who of ocean extraction and no action activist’s in activist inaction. Royal Dutch Shell, the worlds most deadly company, the World Bank, in charge of development in 89 countries around the world, and many others. All coming together pretending to be an environmental meeting, but instead it’s about carving up the ocean as they once subdivided the land.

And instead of asking their guests of honor why they are killing whales with seismic tests and sonar, and factory-overfishing and mining and more, instead, the focus is on easier ways to kill whales who dare wash ashore, causing embarrassment and scrutiny for these huge multi national corporations who want to extract our oceans to death.

Shame on National Geographic. Shell, burn in hell.
