Seaworld Sanitarium

French Riviera never really cared
about a whale named Valentin
French Riviera never was prepared
against the storm that did him in

Halfway ‘round the world San Diego Seaworld
wanted to build bigger tanks
Couldn’t care less about Antibes muddy mess
and soon doomed to join their ranks

A Sting-ray has stung his last
Muddy bay approaching fast
Sea Turtle, Sand Shark
Lights out, darkened park

Complacency is what we’ve got
Orcas in the parking lot
Sea Lions you can’t see
Waters of turbidity

Stop the madness shut them down
Mighty orca’s not your clown
Marineland, Seaquarium
Seaworld Sanitarium

Write a letter, demonstrate
Stand outside of Seaworld’s gate
Their time is coming, they will fall
Free the orcas, free them all

The drama continues to unfold in Antibes France, at Marineland, largest marine park in Europe. The park owners ignored the warning in 2011 when they were hit by a major flood, and re-built the park, even adding new buildings that served to funnel the storm surge waters in from the ocean when the hurricane hit last week. The entire park was inundated, with 90% mortality being reported by activists fighting their way around a total press blackout.

Wilkie and Keijo in 2014:

Valentin has already died in a tank of filth and mud, and now there are unconfirmed reports that keijo has died as well, with Wilkie’s condition deteriorating. According to french activists, the crane pictured was rented and is being used to move the orca bodies to a secret location for low-key necropsies.

Obviously this was a preventable tragedy, and a crime against nature, and it has grave implications for the Seaworld tank expansion in San Diego. How could Seaworld San Diego protect their captive orcas from such a storm driven surge? The answer is simple- they couldn’t.

Stand by for updates.

Plastic Person

All about ME

All about ME

Plastic Person heart of stone
Narcissistic ego zone
Can’t leave well enough alone
Take a selfie with your phone

Plastic Person oh so blind
Acting like you’ve lost your mind
It’s not too late for you to find
One thing matters- are you kind

Plastic Person grow with us
Can’t you see the world’s a muss?
Leave behind the endless fuss
Hop aboard the eco bus

Plastic Person find your heart
From today a brand new start
Don’t make dolphins come to you
See them in the ocean blue

‘All is Whale’ in Avila Beach

Saturday, June 13th, 2015
Humpback feeds in Avila Harbor

Humpback feeds in Avila Harbor

‘All is Whale’ (in Avila Beach)

We traveled to Avila just on the chance
We’d be lucky enough to see Humpback Whales dance
The sky was as blue as a painted canoe
The sun on the water shone all the way through

Breakfast at Fat Cat’s near Avila Pier
Was almost complete when I sensed they were near
And sure enough, I looking off to the south
Saw the surfacing Carlsbad-like cavernous mouth!

Thar she blows! I proclaimed, mixed with hashed brown potatoes
The setting could easily have been in Barbados
But who needs to travel when whales come to you?
It seems like there’s nothing good karma can’t do!

We had the whole restaurant up on it’s feet
A Humpback went breaching, our hearts skipped a beat
Ka-thump! went the seawater filling back in
Up, up flew the pelicans wearing a grin!

People in kayaks came by to say ‘hi!’
Paddle board surfers stood tall as the eye
An eye that was smiling as bright as the sun
We didn’t play lotto but surely had won!

note:

Marnik Van Cauter is an exchange student from Belgium with a nice camera, a great eye, and good luck. We met at Avila Harbor with the Humpbacks dancing just offshore. He promised to send me these photos- thank you Marnik!

Now you know why every year, we say ‘Thank You Whales!’

Fish Head Stew

Sneaky Sperm Whale

Sneaky Sperm Whale

Fish Head Stew

Everybody cry for the stripper of the sea
Feeling so entitled to his fishing industry
Now he has to find another way to stay afloat
Rightful owner started fishing underneath his boat

How did all the codfish ever just belong to you?
Stripping bare the ocean isn’t very nice to do
Now the rightful owners come to make you pay your due
Please enjoy the fish heads, maybe you can make a stew!

Everybody cry for the fishing nets and gear
Whales are bending hooks and it’s increasing every year
50 tonnes of whale and they’re coming here to teach
Notice all the sea lions up starving on the beach

Everybody cry for the empty-handed kid
Fishing out the oceans leaving jellyfish and squid
You can make a chowder from the bait that’s in your pail
School is now in session and your teacher is a whale!

Freedom Chase off Hawaii’s Big Island

Sunday, February 22nd, 2015
Chase for Freedom

Chase for Freedom

Near ten days they chased that whale
His trumpet sounding through the gale
The bow was chopping caps of white
We saw them glowing in the night

A starboard moon splashed the horizon
Hard to port, the sun came risin’
Ropes at ready, one man stood
Raised a long pole sharp ‘n good

Braced against the bounding main
Through the swells took steady aim
And when that whale was well in reach
Just before his mighty breach

The long boat pulled up along side
Of a whale ten days had cried
Boatswain gave a mighty shove
Blade on pole cut deep for love

Soon thereafter he was free
Just as every whale should be
No more ropes and traps and trash
Down came flukes with thunderous crash

Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest
Cutting whales loose feels the best
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Returned that whale from whence he’d come!

The Fish, the Fry and the Whale

Sunday, January 25th, 2015
Free the Orcas!

Free the Orcas!

The Fish the Fry and the Whale

The fish, the fry and the whale
Fortunes entwined at the tail
Heartless captivity slammed
River of sadness be dammed

The tiniest fish is the smelt
Incredible fate she’s been dealt
Endowed by the courts with great powers
To heal watersheds within hours

For NOAA, the message is clear
Move boldly ahead without fear
Give the Endangered priority
And resident orcas seniority

Seventy Eight are what’s left
After four decades of theft
Tell whale prisons run by pathetics
We need Lolitas genetics!

NOAA must not be complacent
Restore the Columbia Basin
The watershed needs King Chinook
And the sea needs the orcas you took!

joey racano

Everything NOAA needs to know to make this decision is right here in black and white: Lolita must go free.

“Supreme Court leaves in place a longstanding ruling that the Endangered Species Act requires federal agencies to consider the preservation of all endangered species their highest priority.”

Thousands March for Lolita in Miami, Elsewhere

Sunday, January 18th, 2015
Thousands March on Miami Seaquarium

Thousands March on Miami Seaquarium

Thousands Rise for Freedom

‘Freedom, let your sweet bell ring
Orcas haven’t done a thing
Only fools would want to cage
The greatest predator of our age’

joey racano

“Lolita is a southern Orca who was captured 44 years ago in Puget Sound. She is part of an endangered species that is in vital need of naturally reproducing. January 17 is a day when humans will meet near her holding tank to demand that she be returned to her waters where her genes will help the species recover. She is an intelligent, social, family oriented animal who has been calling to her family for decades. It is time to reunite her with her family. It is the kind and humane thing to do.”
-David Georgi, professor emeritus

Marches were also held in Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego, Colorado and in London, all demanding freedom for orcas and for and end to the slaughter of dolphins at Tajji, Japan.

Marching in Miami

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015
700 months in a little pool-

700 months in a little pool-

Marching in Miami

They’re marching in Miami
to free Lolita who
spent 45 consecutive years
inside a petting zoo

The kids are so against it
They’ll March in Seattle too
Lolita don’t you worry we
will soon be there for you!

For 700 hundred months
they held you captive in a park
Feeding you dead fish
and pouring chlorine after dark

But now because of Blackfish
the world has woken up
And science says a mom’s still there
who longs to see her pup

They’re marching on Miami
and watching ’round the world
As one, Lolita lovers say:
It’s time to release the girl!

Happy Trickster

Happy Trickster

Happy Trickster

Happy trickster, that’s Coyote
Saw him when I dropped peyote
Laying there in bed with me
Sound asleep and dreaming free

Toes were twitching, he was running
Some fool redneck out there gunning
Left his paw prints on the track
Walked on leaves and doubled back

Happy trickster ears akimbo
Living life in constant limbo
Hunted trapped reviled and hated
So under appreciated

Watch him prance amid the grasses
Sneak amid the sleeping masses
Got Coyote? I say thank it
Let him use your favorite blanket
